China

John has long had a fascination for China and first traveled there in the late 1970s.  He has played close attention to the interaction of the Chinese and American economies and advised US and Japanese corporate clients on Chinese matters. In the early 1990’s, John was asked by US Attorney General Thornburg to host a dinner at John’s home for the visiting Chinese Minister of Justice Cai Cheng who wanted to talk to a broad section of the US private sector. Many of John’s clients with interests involving China attended, including the President of AT&T. China later became central to the COVID-19 experience. During the intense early months of the pandemic, John and others in the COVID 19 group were on a number of Zoom calls with Dr. George Gao, the head of the China CDC, and other Chinese scientists trying to make sense of the pandemic.
